Tips on how to choose a jewelry box

Nov. 26, 2021

While we completely agree that it's better to wear fine jewelry as often as possible than to hide it and only wear it on special occasions, sometimes you shouldn't wear it at all, such as in a swimming pool where chlorine can cause damage, or in very cold weather, which can cause your fingers to shrink and make your ring slip off more easily, or when gardening where abrasive rocks and dirt can scratch the jewelry, or even when you're doing strenuous activities that cause you to sweat, which can also damage jewelry, especially 925 sterling silver. This can also damage your jewelry, especially 925 sterling silver, by causing you to sweat.

In the meantime, it is best to remove your jewelry and store it in a safe place. We hope you have a jewelry box for this purpose. Jewelry boxes, which are usually purchased based on appearance alone, should also be able to protect your jewelry from damage; they should both flatter your jewelry and protect it. With that in mind, here are 4 tips on how to choose a jewelry box.

Jewelry Box

1. First of all, who are you going to give this jewelry box to? For yourself? A child? An adult? Is it a family member, or a special friend? For example, children usually like light-up or musical jewelry boxes. They are charming and make lovely keepsakes. They are also great for children's jewelry. (If you need some help buying jewelry for children, check out this article on buying and not buying jewelry for children). Stackable jewelry boxes are ideal for people who have a lot of jewelry and need practical storage space. As the name implies, stackable jewelry boxes consist of trays that can be stacked on top of each other. Each tray may have a different layout, so there are many options for storing different pieces of jewelry. As gifts, mirrored jewelry boxes and spinner jewelry boxes are lovely, and they also come in a variety of compartments and trays.

2. Secondly, there are the materials -- we are no longer limited to velvet or satin lined boxes. Silk and cotton are also acceptable and popular. The most important thing here is that the lining should be soft and lint-free to avoid possible wear and tear on your jewelry. For the box itself, wood is a good choice. It is durable, protects your jewelry and helps stop moisture buildup that can damage your jewelry with prolonged exposure. Glass jewelry boxes are another option. While they come in many different sizes, they are usually relatively simple in design, consisting of a simple compartment. These make great gifts because they are very chic and attractive, but they are more fragile than other types of jewelry boxes, so they are not the best choice for long-term jewelry storage.

3. Size -- Is this for a single piece of jewelry or to keep multiple pieces together? If you have a lot of jewelry and are storing them together, you'll need a larger box with lots of compartments and a place for necklaces. Or, you may only have a lot of rings - and then you'll want a jewelry box with lots of slots in which each ring can be placed. Maybe you have a lot of smaller pieces, like earrings or bracelets. In that case, choose a box with plenty of compartments to organize your jewelry more easily. Necklace more your thing? Make sure you have a jewelry box with an upright design that has enough space to hang your necklaces. Then there are the locks - do you want to be able to lock your jewelry box? Some people prefer locks as an extra precaution in case a curious child thinks your jewelry is a good dress-up accessory. Locks are also great if you plan to keep your jewelry in a jewelry box while you travel.

4. Consider the shape of the jewelry box. The most common shapes for single-piece jewelry boxes are oval, rectangular, round or square boxes, but there are many other options to choose from, such as diamond, heart or shell-shaped. Note, however, that standard shapes are more spacious than more unique shapes.

Jewelry boxes come in many different shapes, styles and varieties, and whether you already own a lot of jewelry or just a few pieces and want to expand your collection with new pieces you admire or a few custom pieces, finding the right box is part of the fun of owning jewelry and an important aspect of caring for and preserving it. Jewelry boxes also make beautiful gifts for all occasions, all ages and all kinds of relationships. They also make beautiful gifts for ourselves, help us organize our jewelry, and help protect it from damage and loss.
